AAM TERMINOLOGY · COURSE LEARNING ARCHITECTURE

Evidencible.

Learning that can be demonstrated. Evidence that can be defended.

A defining condition of the Alignify™ Assessment Methodology.

01 · DEFINITION

What does evidencible mean?

A learning objective is evidencible when the intended capability can be demonstrated through observable student performance that generates evidence suitable for assessment.

Evidencible directs attention to the relationship between the capability stated in a learning objective and the student performance that could credibly demonstrate that capability.

02 · THE REASON

Why introduce the term?

A learning objective may describe meaningful learning and appear measurable in principle, yet still lack a defensible way to generate evidence of the intended capability.

The term evidencible makes that design question explicit: What would students actually do to demonstrate this learning?

It helps faculty identify a suitable evidence-generating learning activity before selecting scoring criteria or collecting assessment results.

03 · THE DISTINCTION

Evidencible and measurable are related, but different.

EVIDENCIBLE

Can the learning be demonstrated?

Focuses on whether the intended capability can be observed through student performance and captured as assessment evidence.

What performance would demonstrate this capability?

MEASURABLE

Can the evidence be evaluated?

Focuses on whether the resulting evidence can be judged against defined criteria to determine the degree of demonstrated learning.

What criteria will distinguish stronger from weaker performance?

First establish a credible demonstration of learning. Then establish how the resulting evidence will be evaluated.

05 · PRACTICAL APPLICATION

From an intention to a defensible demonstration.

DIFFICULT TO EVIDENCE

“Understand the principles of ethical decision-making.”

The intended learning is important, but “understand” leaves the required demonstration unspecified. A faculty member must infer what student performance would count as evidence.

REVISED LEARNING OBJECTIVE

“Evaluate an organizational decision using established ethical principles.”

The objective identifies a coherent capability that students can demonstrate through a defensible performance.

CORRESPONDING EGLA

Evidence-Generating Learning Activity

Students analyze a realistic organizational dilemma, evaluate a proposed decision against selected ethical principles, and justify their conclusion in a written case analysis.

THE DESIGN QUESTION

Before asking how to score learning, ask how students will demonstrate it.

Evidencible helps close the gap between the language of a learning objective and the assessment evidence an institution can reasonably use to support a claim about student learning.
